Core Concept

ChatGPT Search

OpenAI's integrated web search feature within ChatGPT that enables the AI to retrieve real-time information from the web before generating a response — transforming ChatGPT from a static knowledge base into a live search engine.

ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's built-in web browsing and search capability, which allows ChatGPT to query the live web as part of generating a response. Unlike the base ChatGPT model (which answers from training data with a knowledge cutoff), ChatGPT Search retrieves and synthesizes current information.

How ChatGPT Search Works

When a user submits a query, ChatGPT with Search:

  1. Determines whether web retrieval would improve the response
  2. Executes one or more web searches (using Bing's index by default)
  3. Retrieves the most relevant web content
  4. Synthesizes the retrieved content into a coherent response
  5. Provides source citations alongside the answer

This is a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) architecture — the model's knowledge is supplemented by live retrieval rather than replaced by it.

ChatGPT Search vs. Base ChatGPT for Business Recommendations

| | ChatGPT Search | Base ChatGPT | |--|--|--| | Data freshness | Real-time | Training cutoff | | Business recommendations | Pulled from live directories and web | Based on training data | | Citation sources shown | Yes | Rarely | | Influenced by your website | Directly (crawled in real time) | Indirectly (via training data) | | Influenced by reviews | Yes (via Yelp, Google) | Limited (via training data) |

What ChatGPT Search Looks At for Local Business Queries

When a user asks ChatGPT "find me the best [business category] in [city]," ChatGPT Search typically retrieves from:

  • Yelp — star ratings, review count, category, location
  • Google Business Profile data (via indexed pages) — hours, address, description
  • Local news and review sites — mentions in local media, blog posts
  • Your own website — if it ranks in Bing for relevant queries

Optimizing for ChatGPT Search

  1. Yelp is the highest-leverage single action — ChatGPT Search pulls Yelp data prominently for local recommendations. A complete Yelp profile with 50+ recent reviews dramatically improves your mention rate.
  2. Bing indexing — ChatGPT Search uses Bing's web index. Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and ensure your pages are indexed.
  3. Structured data — JSON-LD schema helps both Bing and ChatGPT parse your business information accurately.
  4. News and authoritative mentions — links and mentions in local news, industry publications, and high-DA directories are picked up by Bing and thus by ChatGPT Search.

Scope monitors your ChatGPT mention rate separately from other platforms so you can see exactly how you perform in ChatGPT Search and target improvements accordingly.

Q: Is ChatGPT Search the same as Bing AI / Microsoft Copilot? A: They use similar technology (both rely on Bing's search infrastructure and OpenAI's models) but are separate products. ChatGPT Search is integrated into ChatGPT.com; Copilot is Microsoft's implementation in Windows, Edge, and Bing.com. Scope monitors ChatGPT specifically, not Copilot.
