Core Concept

Local Pack

The map-based block of three business listings that appears at the top of Google Search results for local queries — often called the "map pack" or "3-pack" — and its AI-equivalent in platforms that surface local business recommendations with maps and structured data.

The local pack (also called the Google Map Pack or 3-Pack) is the block of three business listings with a map that appears at the top of Google Search results when a user searches for a local business or service. Appearing in the local pack is one of the most valuable positions in traditional local SEO — and its AI equivalent is now one of the most valuable positions in AI search.

The Traditional Local Pack

In traditional Google Search, the local pack shows:

  • A Google Map with pins for the three businesses
  • For each business: name, star rating, review count, address, hours, and a link to Google Maps
  • Click-to-call and directions buttons

The local pack appears above all organic search results (and often above paid ads) for queries with local intent: "dentist near me," "best pizza in [city]," "plumber Austin."

The AI Evolution of Local Results

AI platforms are evolving local business displays:

Google AI Overviews + Local — Google is increasingly integrating local pack results directly into AI Overview responses for local queries. A business appearing in both the local pack and the AI Overview has maximum visibility.

Conversational local recommendations — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude don't show map interfaces, but they describe specific local businesses in their text responses — the functional equivalent of a local pack recommendation.

Local Pack Ranking Factors

The factors that drive local pack rankings also drive AI recommendation visibility:

  1. Proximity — how close the business is to the user or the queried location
  2. Relevance — how well the business matches the query (determined by GBP category, description, and website content)
  3. Prominence — how well-known and authoritative the business is (reviews, backlinks, mentions, overall web presence)

Local Pack vs. Organic Results

Local pack placements operate separately from organic (blue link) rankings. A business can rank #1 in the local pack while ranking #20 organically, or vice versa. Local pack optimization focuses specifically on:

  • Google Business Profile completeness and activity
  • Review volume and recency
  • Local citation consistency
  • Proximity to the search query location

AI Local Pack Optimization

To maximize both traditional local pack placement and AI local recommendation frequency:

  1. Complete Google Business Profile — the shared foundation for both
  2. Collect Google reviews consistently — reviews drive both local pack ranking and AI recommendation
  3. Maintain citation consistency — NAP agreement across all directories
  4. Post to GBP weekly — active businesses rank higher in both traditional and AI local results
  5. Schema markup on your website — especially LocalBusiness schema with complete address and hours

Q: Is there a way to pay to appear in the local pack? A: No. The local pack is an organic placement — it cannot be purchased. Google's Local Services Ads appear above the local pack as a separate paid format, but the organic local pack positions are not for sale.

Q: How many businesses appear in an AI local recommendation? A: It varies by platform and query. Perplexity often lists 3–5 businesses with citations. ChatGPT might list 2–4. Google AI Overviews may list 3 businesses integrated with map data. The fewer businesses listed, the more valuable each placement is.
