How Agencies Add AI Visibility Next to an SEO Retainer

Scope TeamOctober 4, 202620 min

Agencies add AI visibility as a retainer line next to SEO, not instead of it. Baseline whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity recommend the client; keep Search Console as the Google scoreboard; ship extractable pages on URLs that already exist. On 4 Oct 2026 the US desktop SERP for “ai visibility agency” opened with a listicle of GEO agencies (Concurate #1). Reddit’s “PR agency leaders: are you selling AI visibility to clients?” sat at #7 — that is the operator question this page answers. Measure with the AI visibility checker. Keep GEO next to SEO.

What we tested (4 Oct 2026)

This is a net-new Learn URL. Unique data is today’s SERP, not a Scope-on-Scope ranking dump.

  • Query ai visibility agency, desktop US, 4 Oct 2026: Concurate “18 Top Generative Engine Optimization Agencies in 2026” #1. Overthink Group tools roundup #2. Boost Marketing service page #3. LinkedIn “8 Best AI Visibility Agencies for B2B” #4. Wellows “AI visibility for growth marketing agencies” #5. SaasyLinks “Best AI SEO Agencies” #6. Reddit r/PublicRelations “PR agency leaders: Are you selling AI visibility to clients?” #7. RevvGrowth AEO agencies #8. HubSpot-AEO agencies #9. Scope not in the top 9.
  • Query AI visibility for marketing agencies: Geometrics “Monitor AI Visibility for All Your Clients” #1 — a competitor agency dashboard. Gen3 Marketing product launch #2. Cairrot “Best LLM Tracking Tools for Marketing Agencies” #3. Reddit “good AI visibility apps” #4. Scope absent.
  • Query geo vs seo the same morning: Storychief #1, Foundation Inc #2, Reddit “I keep hearing GEO ≠ SEO, but I don’t buy it” #3. The pages that rank describe a pair, not a replacement.
  • Scope /for/agencies (last-good GSC, 25 Sep 2026 dump): 1,119 impressions, 0 clicks, average position 59. The named query behind it, ai visibility agency, was 606 impressions, 0 clicks, position 54. That farm URL is not this guide. Do not noindex it from this article.
  • Site 28d ending 24 Sep 2026: 34 clicks, 5,984 impressions. Clicks held near 40/month since June while impressions halved — farm pruning, not a ranking wipe.

Intent split: the #1 result is “hire an agency.” This page is the other job — how an agency that already sells SEO packages the second scoreboard. Those are different SERPs. Do not turn this URL into a “best agencies” listicle.

Should an agency replace SEO with GEO?

No. Clients who already pay for rankings, crawls, and content should keep paying for them. Answer engines retrieve public pages. If Google cannot index the page, ChatGPT with browsing cannot cite it either. Google Search Central (2 Sep 2026) says there is no special AI file or schema that tickets a URL into AI Overviews.

Sell a pair:

Retainer lineJobScoreboardCadence
SEOGet found on GoogleSearch Console, rank trackingExisting
AI visibilityGet named in answersMentions, citations, recommendations by engineEvery 5–30 days on a coverage set

If a pitch deck says “SEO is dead,” rewrite the deck. Reddit’s GEO-vs-SEO thread (#3 this morning) is operators pushing back on that slide. The agencies that rank for the pair are the ones who describe it as a pair.

What does the service actually include?

A first AEO audit is visibility, citations, opportunities, and platform splits — not a Google ranking report. Profound’s public AEO guide (Chapter 4, read 26 Aug 2026) is a clean description of that baseline. Scope already runs the first four from a URL. We do not claim AI-referral traffic, a 1.5-billion-prompt index, or spec-sheet accuracy testing. Do not resell those as if every tool ships them.

In the first 30 days

  1. Coverage set. 8–20 prompts the client’s buyers type: category (“best for ”), comparison (“ vs ”), decision (“ pricing”). Refuse collision-risk names (homonyms, Graph API methods, student-citation queries).
  2. Four-engine baseline. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity. Score each prompt as omitted / mentioned / cited / recommended. Claude is not ChatGPT. Profound (Jul 2026): Claude citations cluster on Brave’s top 10; ChatGPT leans lists, YouTube, UGC; Gemini leans editorial.
  3. Citation ledger. Which URLs the engines actually cited. Split owned / competitor / independent roundup / junk. Independent roundups are the outreach queue. Competitor docs are not.
  4. One extractable page. Upgrade the money URL that already matches the H1. 40–80 word first answer, dated fact, question H2s. Do not mint /for/{niche} clones. Our own farm is the counter-example.
  5. Two-scoreboard report. A page of Google (clicks, impressions, coverage) and a page of answer engines. Never one blended “visibility %.”

Every month after

  • Re-run the coverage set. Quote spend before a force rescan.
  • Ship at most two net-new client URLs a week; otherwise upgrade.
  • Track whether a roundup that already cites the category now names the client. That is the recommendation lever, not another blog.

How do you price it without cannibalizing SEO?

Price it as an add-on with its own deliverable, not a discount on SEO hours.

What clients can inspect without a login:

  • A dated baseline (engine × prompt grid).
  • The citation list from that run.
  • The one page you upgraded, with the first-answer paragraph visible in view-source.
  • Next month’s coverage set.

What not to promise:

  • “We’ll get you into ChatGPT this week.” Retrieval plus consensus takes longer than a sprint, and Google recrawl plus CDN cache lag mean same-day rewrites do not move citations.
  • “We’ll replace Semrush.” Complementary. The Scope vs Semrush frame is “use both.”
  • “No signup checker” unless that is true on the live tool. Ahrefs says it. Copying a claim you cannot keep is how you lose the roundup later.

Scope’s public prices (Starter $25/mo, Growth from $79/mo) are a product SKU, not an agency rate card. Agencies markup measurement plus the writing and outreach. Do not paste our SKU into a client proposal as if it were labor.

Worked example: selling the pair (SaaS client)

A B2B SaaS client already ranks for a handful of branded queries and pays for a content retainer. They want “ChatGPT to recommend us.”

Wrong delivery: 12 new “AI visibility for ” posts, an llms.txt, and a screenshot of one ChatGPT answer from the founder’s laptop.

Right delivery:

  1. Coverage set of 12 prompts (category, three competitors, pricing, MCP/integration if they have one).
  2. Baseline: which engines name them, which URLs get cited, who is recommended instead.
  3. One upgraded compare or use-case URL with a 40–80 word answer and a dated “what we tested” box.
  4. Off-site: one independent roundup that already ranks for their category — listings and factual inclusion, not a cold email from the client’s domain.
  5. Report: Search Console held; answer-engine grid moved from omit → mention on two prompts, still omitted on the category prompt. Honest.

That last line is the product. A green dashboard that cannot explain which event moved is how retainers churn.

Common misconception

“The client needs an AI visibility agency, so we should rank for ‘ai visibility agency’.”

That SERP is hire-intent listicles. An agency site can hold a service page for that query. This Learn URL is the operator playbook. Mixing them produces a page that ranks for neither. Scope’s /for/agencies already occupies 1,119 impressions at position 59 with 0 clicks — do not clone it.

“Ship programmatic pages for every vertical the client serves.” Google is pruning that pattern. Niche Learn-for-industry shells are frozen here for the same reason.

30-minute operator checklist

For one client, one week.

  1. Minute 0–5. Write the pitch sentence: “We keep your Google program and add a monthly read of whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity recommend you.” If the sentence contains “instead of SEO,” rewrite it.
  2. Minute 5–12. List 10 buyer prompts. Drop any that are homonyms or student-citation queries.
  3. Minute 12–20. Run those prompts through the checker or Scope MCP. Screenshot is not a baseline; the grid is.
  4. Minute 20–26. Pick one existing client URL whose H1 matches a losing prompt. Plan the 40–80 word answer from a fact you can date. Do not register a new path.
  5. Minute 26–30. Draft the two-scoreboard slide. Ban-check: no invented win rate, no claim you ship AI-referral revenue tracking unless you do.

Counter-example

A tools roundup sitting at #2 for “ai visibility agency” this morning is a tools page occupying an agency query. That is the same failure as ranking APA for “cited by ChatGPT.” If your service page talks about software SKUs more than the retainer shape, Google will file you with the tools. This page stays on the retainer.

What to do next

Run a client URL through the AI visibility checker. Keep their SEO program. If your team works in Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor, pull the same baseline through Scope MCP. For the audit components you can already sell, use the AEO audit. For product compare, Scope vs Profound lists honest non-claims (prompt-volume index, AI-referral analytics, spec-sheet accuracy).

FAQ

Q: How do marketing agencies add AI visibility to an SEO retainer? A: Keep the Google program. Add a coverage set of buyer prompts, a four-engine baseline (mention / citation / recommendation), one extractable page upgrade, and a monthly two-scoreboard report. Do not replace Semrush, and do not mint a niche-page farm.

Q: Is “ai visibility agency” a good keyword for an agency site? A: It is hire-intent. Use it on a service page that describes the retainer. Do not use it as the H1 of an operator playbook, and do not confuse it with “AI visibility for marketing agencies,” which this morning opened on a competitor dashboard.

Q: How is this different from an SEO audit? A: An SEO audit asks whether Google can retrieve and rank pages. An AEO / AI-visibility audit asks whether an answer engine will name the client after it retrieved whatever it retrieved. Both need the page to be indexed.

Q: Should agencies publish 3–5 AI guides a week for each client? A: No. Three to five quality slots is a your shop’s production calendar, not per client. Per client: one coverage set, at most two net-new URLs a week, upgrades otherwise. Empty buffer = skip.

Q: Can Scope replace the SEO suite we already resell? A: No. Scope measures whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity recommend a business, next to that business’s Google SEO program. Use both.
