Setting Up Your Business Profile

6 min read

Your business profile is the foundation that Scope builds everything on top of — your prompt library, your schema pack, your optimization recommendations, and your benchmark comparisons. Getting it right from the start saves you significant cleanup later.

Accessing Your Business Profile

From the dashboard, click your business name in the top left, then select Edit Business Profile.

Business Name

Use your legal or operating business name exactly as it appears in your primary Google Business Profile. Don't add keywords, locations, or modifiers — those are spam signals that AI platforms recognize and discount.

| Do | Don't | |----|-------| | Austin Plumbing Co. | Austin Plumbing Co. — #1 Plumber | | Riverdale Family Dentistry | Best Dentist Riverdale - Riverdale Family Dentistry |

If your business trades under different names in different contexts (e.g., "John Smith DDS" and "Smith Family Dental"), use whichever name your customers most commonly search for, and add the other as an alias in your profile.

Business Category

Your category determines which prompt templates Scope builds for you. Select the most specific category that accurately describes your primary service.

If you offer multiple distinct services (e.g., a dental practice that also does orthodontics), set your primary category and add secondary categories. Scope will build prompts across all active categories.

Location

For local businesses, enter your service address (the address you use on Google Business Profile). If you serve customers at their location (plumbers, cleaners, mobile services), enter your base address but enable "Service area business" — this adjusts your prompt library to use service-area framing rather than "near me" queries.

For SaaS and e-commerce, leave location blank. Scope will build national/global prompts focused on product categories and competitor comparisons rather than geographic queries.

Website URL

Enter your primary domain without the www prefix. Scope uses this to:

  • Crawl your site for existing schema markup
  • Verify citation consistency
  • Detect your current content coverage

Services

Add each service you offer in the Services section. Be specific — don't just say "plumbing." List:

  • Emergency plumbing
  • Water heater installation and repair
  • Drain cleaning
  • Pipe repair and replacement
  • Bathroom remodels

Each service you add generates additional targeted prompts. A plumber with 12 listed services will have a much richer prompt library than one with just "plumbing."

Price Range

Set your approximate price range ($ / $$ / $$$ / $$$$). This affects prompt construction for price-sensitive queries like "affordable plumber" or "premium interior designer."

Target Customer Description

In a sentence or two, describe who your ideal customer is. Example: "Homeowners and small businesses in Austin needing emergency or planned plumbing services, typically looking for reliability and fast response over the lowest price."

Scope uses this to refine prompt intent modeling — which customer questions to prioritize in your library.

Saving and Syncing

After updating your profile, click Save. Scope will:

  • Rebuild your prompt library based on the new information (takes ~5 minutes)
  • Regenerate your Schema Pack with the updated business data
  • Trigger a verification check of your citation consistency against the new profile data

The next scheduled daily scan will run against your updated prompt library.

Q: How often should I update my business profile? A: Update it whenever any core business information changes: new service added, price range changed, new location opened. Also update it when you notice your prompt library isn't covering a service area you care about — that usually means your profile needs that service added.

Q: Can I have multiple locations under one business profile? A: Currently, each Scope business profile represents one location. For multi-location businesses, create a separate business for each location. This gives you per-location visibility data and lets you compare performance across locations.
